You can contract an STI by having unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has the STI.That doesnโt mean sex is the only way STIs are transmitted. Depending on the specific STI, infections may also be transmitted through sharing needles, skin-to-skin contact, during birth and breastfeeding.

Anyone who is sexually active is at risk for an STI, regardless of gender, race, social class or sexual orientation. That said, teenagers and young adults acquire STIs more easily than older people. By age 25, half of sexually active adults get an STI.
Having multiple sex partners also raises the risk.
๐๐๐ง ๐ฏ๐ข๐ซ๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ฌ ๐ ๐๐ญ ๐๐๐๐ฌ?
Yes, they can. Many STIs spread through any type of sexual activity, including skin-to-skin contact and oral sex. This is especially true of STIs that produce genital lesions or sores. Vaginal and anal sex arenโt the only way STIs are transmitted. Itโs also possible to contract or transmit an STI through oral sex. In other words, STIs can be passed from one personโs genitals to another personโs mouth or throat and vice versa. Oral STIs arenโt always noticeable. When they do cause symptoms, they often include a sore throat or sores around the mouth or throat.

It is important for pregnant women to be checked for STIs. They can cause women to go into labor too early and may complicate delivery. Many STIs can be passed from mother to baby during pregnancy, childbirth or after the baby is born. STIs’ effects on babies can include:
- still birth
- low birth weight
- neurologic problems
- blindness
- liver disease and serious infection
But there are treatments to minimize these risks. Treatment during pregnancy can cure some STIs and lower the risk of passing the infection to your baby.

Most STI treatments do not protect you from getting the same infection again. A course of drugs may cure gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia or trichomoniasis, but a new exposure can start a new infection.

And if you’re not taking the right precautions to protect yourself, you can be re-infected quickly or even pick up a second STI.

When used properly, condoms provide effective protection against many STIs.
Condoms are generally effective at preventing STIs that spread through fluids, such as semen or blood. But they canโt fully protect against STIs that spread from skin to skin. If your condom doesnโt cover the infected area of skin, you can still contract an STI or pass it to your partner.
Condoms can help protect against not only STIs, but also unwanted pregnancy. In contrast, many other types of birth control lower the risk of unwanted pregnancy but not STIs. For example, the following forms of birth control donโt protect against STIs: birth control pills, birth control shots, birth control implants, intra uterine devices (IUDs)
Regular STI screening is a good idea for anyone whoโs sexually active. Itโs particularly important for those with a new partner or multiple partners. Early diagnosis and treatment can help stop the spread of infections. Since STIs often have no symptoms, testing is the only way to know for sure if you have one. If your partner tests positive for an STI, itโs important for them to follow their healthcare providerโs recommended treatment plan.
You can also ask your healthcare provider about strategies to protect yourself from contracting the STI from your partner. For example, if your partner has HIV, your doctor or healthcare provider will likely encourage you to take pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

If you have any genital symptoms, you shouldnโt wait to seek medical help! Whether itโs STIs in their infancy (beginner stage), advanced or reoccurring. Waiting too long can only worsen your health and the STI wonโt get better on its own.

The recommended STI treatment varies, depending on what STI you have โ viral, bacterial or otherwise. Itโs important to take all your medication as prescribed and continue taking them even if you feel better before you finish taking all of them!
